Giving Hearts Day

Giving Hearts Day is a 24-hour fundraising event held each February, across North Dakota and northwest Minnesota, to support local charities. Since 2008, it has raised nearly $195 million, with the 2025 event bringing in $31.48 million from over 40,000 donors supporting 619 nonprofits.

In addition to financial gifts, donors contribute goods and volunteer time, making it a full community effort. Charities receive support like training and matching funds to help them succeed, making Giving Hearts Day a powerful platform for long-term impact.

Minnesota FoodShare March Campaign

The Minnesota FoodShare March Campaign, led by GMCC, is the state’s largest annual food and fund drive, supporting nearly 300 food shelves. Held from March 1 to April 6, it unites individuals, businesses, and organizations to fight hunger. All donations go into a shared FoodFund for fair distribution. Since 1982, the campaign has raised over $18.5 million and millions of pounds of food.

It fills a critical gap after the holidays, when food shelves are often low. Participants can register, donate, or promote locally. In 2024, the campaign raised $10.74 million and 7.57 million pounds of food. Its mission is to ensure all Minnesotans have consistent access to nutritious food.

Free Summer Meal Program

The Summer Lunch Program plays a vital role in supporting youth nutrition by providing an average of 2,000 meals per week, including both breakfast and lunch, to children and teens under the age of 18. Operating on weekdays during the summer months, the program ensures that kids have access to healthy, consistent meals even when school is out. These meals are completely free of charge, helping families stretch their budgets and reduce food insecurity during a time when school meal programs are unavailable.

Meals are served at multiple park locations throughout the community, making them easily accessible for children from a variety of neighborhoods. Each meal is nutritious and well-balanced, designed to meet dietary guidelines and support healthy growth and development. Beyond just food, the program also fosters community engagement and provides a safe, welcoming environment for young people to gather. It’s an essential service that supports not only physical health, but also social and emotional well-being during the summer break.

Empty Bowls Fundraiser

Since 2005, our Empty Bowls fundraiser has brought the Grand Forks community together every November to raise funds and awareness in the fight against hunger. This month-long event symbolizes the struggle of those facing food insecurity, with local residents, artists, and businesses contributing to support the cause. The empty bowl serves as a powerful reminder and call to action to help those in need.

Proceeds benefit St. Joseph’s Food Pantry and the Free Summer Lunch Program, both of which serve a growing number of families and children in our area. By funding meals during the summer and stocking pantry shelves year-round, Empty Bowls plays a vital role in reducing hunger and supporting food access for vulnerable members of our community.
